He was arrested in Barcelona in May 2005, although it is said he was first put under police surveillance in 2002 because of his relationships with radical Islamists. He is said to have been a full member of Movimiento Salafista de la Yihad Combatiente, controlled by Serhane ben Abdelmajid Fakhet (El Tunecino) and Rabei Osman el Sayed Ahmed (El Egipcio).
